Thomas Pepin, better known as Tom Pepin, is a Tampa Bay business leader and philanthropist whose work has supported commerce, education, healthcare, and public safety across the region for more than four decades, and is known for a steady approach to leadership and community involvement as a former President and CEO of Pepin Distributing Company. Through his business career and charitable work, he has helped strengthen many institutions that serve the Tampa Bay community.
Tom Pepin returned to Florida after graduating from Middlebury College in Vermont. After completing his studies, he joined the family business and began working at Pepin Distributing Company. In 1986, he purchased the company from his father and started guiding the organization into its next phase of growth.
Under his leadership, the company expanded into one of Florida’s largest beverage distribution businesses. Over time, the organization grew into an enterprise valued at about $260 million. The company served as an important distributor for major beverage manufacturers and became known for disciplined operations and dependable service across the region.
While expanding the business, Thomas also emphasized the importance of community engagement. Pepin Distributing regularly supported nonprofit organizations, civic groups, and initiatives that assist first responders. These efforts helped demonstrate how a privately owned company can remain connected to the community it serves.
One of his most notable contributions to Tampa Bay is the creation of the T. Pepin Hospitality Centre. Tom established the facility to provide nonprofit organizations with a professional venue for fundraising events and community gatherings. Many charitable groups struggle to find affordable spaces for large events, and the center was created to reduce that challenge.
Education has also been a central focus of his community involvement. When families approached him about students who were struggling in traditional classroom environments, Thomas's Family helped support the creation of Pepin Academies. These public charter schools were designed to serve students with learning differences such as dyslexia and ADHD.
For more than twenty-five years, Pepin Academies has helped thousands of students through individualized education programs that promote confidence, accountability, and life skills. The schools continue to provide a supportive learning environment for students who benefit from specialized instruction.
Healthcare is another area where he has contributed significant support. Through the Pepin Heart Institute, Thomas helped fund cardiovascular research, patient care, and education related to heart health. These programs work alongside healthcare institutions throughout the Tampa Bay region to improve treatment and awareness of heart-related conditions. His contributions in healthcare philanthropy earned recognition as Healthcare Philanthropist of the Year.
Public safety has also remained an important area of commitment. He has supported initiatives connected with the Tampa Police Department Chief's Foundation and other law enforcement programs. These efforts focus on officer wellness, family support, and community outreach. His dedication to these initiatives was recognized when he received the Tampa Police Department Citizen of the Year award and was named the twentieth Lightning Community Hero.
Through these organizations, Thomas continues to support projects that align with the family’s values and commitment to the Tampa Bay community. Rather than stepping back from public engagement, he sees this phase as an opportunity to deepen his focus on long-term partnerships and meaningful community impact.
Several institutions have recognized his contributions. In 2017, Tom was inducted into the Business Hall of Fame for his business leadership and civic service. The Florida Senate has acknowledged his work in community development on several occasions, and the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners also honored him for decades of civic commitment. In 2023, Temple Park was renamed in recognition of the Pepin family’s contributions to the city.
Those who know him often describe him as steady, thoughtful, and loyal to the relationships he builds. His career reflects years of consistent effort rather than sudden success. Through business leadership, charitable investment, and civic involvement, Thomas Pepin has helped strengthen many parts of the Tampa Bay region, and his long-term influence continues to benefit the community today.
